Brave Leo

Leo is the AI assistant built into the Brave browser. Its Bring Your Own Model setting, on desktop, lets it use any OpenAI-compatible chat completions endpoint.

Copies this page's setup instructions, to paste into your coding agent.

Help me set this up to use Bayle AI, an OpenAI-compatible API. Full guide: https://docs.bayle.ai/guides/agents/brave-leo/

Goal: set up Brave Leo (https://brave.com/leo/) to answer with a Bayle model, through Bring Your Own Model. This is a settings screen on desktop Brave, so walk me through it step by step and wait for me at each one.

1. Make sure I have the desktop Brave browser. If not, send me to https://brave.com/download/.
2. Pick a model. The model request name must match an id exactly:
   curl -s "https://api.bayle.ai/models?type=text" | jq -r '.data[].id'
Show me the list and let me choose. If I will ask Leo about sensitive pages, point me to a Private model (model_spec.privacy).
3. Tell me to open brave://settings/leo-ai, go to "Bring your own model" and choose "Add new model", then fill in:
   Label: Bayle (any name)
Model request name: the chosen id
Server endpoint: https://api.bayle.ai/chat/completions (Leo wants the full endpoint, not a base URL)
API key: my Bayle key, without a "Bearer" prefix. Tell me to paste it into the field myself; do not ask me to type it into this chat.
4. Tell me to save and pick the model from Leo's model menu.
5. Verify: run one curl to POST https://api.bayle.ai/chat/completions with the chosen model and show me the result, then ask me to send Leo a short message and confirm it answers.

Rules:
1. The base URL is https://api.bayle.ai exactly as written. Append no path to it.
2. Read the key from the BAYLE_API_KEY environment variable. Never write the key itself into a file you create, a command, a commit or the chat. Where the tool keeps the key in its own settings screen, tell me where to paste it. If BAYLE_API_KEY is not set, stop and ask me to create a key at https://chat.bayle.ai/developers and export it.
3. Take model ids only from GET https://api.bayle.ai/models (no key needed). Never guess one.
4. Finish with one real test request, show me the result and list the files you changed.

Leo is built into the Brave desktop browser. Download Brave from the official download page if you don’t have it yet.

Don't have a Bayle key yet?Get API key
  1. Go to brave://settings/leo-ai.

  2. Under Bring your own model, choose Add new model.

  3. Fill in the form:

    Field Value
Label Bayle (any name you like)
    Model request name MODEL_ID
    Server endpoint https://api.bayle.ai/chat/completions
API key Your Bayle key, without a Bearer prefix
  4. Save, then pick the model from Leo’s model menu.

Unlike most tools, Leo wants the full endpoint, not a base URL, so the path is included.

The model request name must match an id exactly:

Terminal window
curl -s "https://api.bayle.ai/models?type=text" | jq -r '.data[].id'

Leo sends the page you’re reading as context when you ask about it. If that content is sensitive, choose a Private model; see Privacy.
